UC Davis has published a study, funded by CalNEXT, that examines the market landscape, stakeholder perspectives, and adoption pathways in California for residential multi-function heat pumps (MFHPs)– which integrate space heating, cooling, and water heating into a single system. This research synthesizes findings from a landscape analysis, interviews with 49 stakeholders across 41 organizations, and a statewide customer survey of 961 Californians to assess the opportunities and barriers facing MFHP deployment across key residential segments.
The study is designed to support technology transfer and adoption by identifying where MFHPs show the strongest value proposition today—and what gaps must be addressed to enable broader uptake.
